Summary:

In completing this study towards the effects of video games and obesity I have found that the virtual games such as Nintendo Wii do provide a slight amount of exercise, though not enough to make any difference. Though the Wii games do create a slight energy increase, a major negative factor related to video games is social and community awareness. Children are becoming anti-social in staying inside, when they decide to go outside and play with friends, children gain the important knowledge of social skills. Whereas inside these skills cannot develop as fast, which in time affects the social community. In children staying inside this also has an effect on the community in relation to the maintenance of parks and ovals, with the number of people visiting these sites dropping, the question of whether the money required for maintenance is worth it has started to arise amongst certain councils. Children are being brought up in a technology filled environment, this in parts is a positive effect. On the other hand, with all of this new technology children are becoming less inclined to do activities for themselves. Video games along with junk food are becoming a major problem in contributing to childhood obesity, the government along with schools are creating new programs for children and their parents in creating awareness for healthy eating habits and exercise programs. To make a difference in the childhood obesity problem the government needs to take more action in helping parents to keep their children healthy. Their needs to be a focus on schools sports programs and nutritional programs, making children more active at school and better educated on healthy eating.
